Manchester United manager Amorim has reversed his original plan and is set to keep Cameroonian international Andre Onana as the first-choice goalkeeper for the new season.
Despite previously requesting the club to sign a first-choice goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, this idea has been temporarily shelved due to Onana's high salary and the difficulty of a potential transfer.
Since joining United from Inter Milan for over £47 million in 2023, Onana has remained the club's starting goalkeeper. However, multiple costly errors during the 2024/25 season cast doubt over his future. United have acknowledged that Onana's £120,000-per-week salary and high transfer valuation have attracted little interest this summer, making it difficult to sell him. While Amorim still hopes to bring in strong competition for the goalkeeper position to prevent Onana from becoming too comfortable, practical constraints mean he has to accept that Onana will at least start the new season as the first-choice.
Meanwhile, Amorim and the club hierarchy are actively identifying potential targets for reinforcement, with 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Lamon from Royal Antwerp emerging as a key focus.
It is understood that United have launched further scouting of Lamon and are assessing whether he has the ability to challenge Onana. If the transfer progresses smoothly, he would become a new competitor for the goalkeeper position at United. Although no official offer has been made yet, the club has spoken positively of the former Brugge youth product.
United plan to complete the signing of a new goalkeeper in the coming weeks but will not rush into a deal before the pre season friendly against Leeds United on July 19. The club remains active in the transfer market, seeking comprehensive reinforcements in a bid to achieve better results in the new season.
