Ruben Amorim views Andre Onana's departure as crucial to his reconstruction of Manchester United, and Onana will join Turkish club Trabzonspor on a one-season loan. The relationship between Onana and Manchester United manager Amorim has completely broken down over the past month.
A source said: “It feels like Andre only shows up as a matter of routine, but he has not demonstrated any team spirit at all.”
Amorim was dissatisfied that the 29-year-old Onana pulled his hamstring right at the start of pre-season training. This dissatisfaction was compounded by the fact that he was photographed playing football on a muddy field in his hometown back in June.
Onana is one of the several star players that Amorim has let go this summer. He has already offloaded Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony, while left-back Tyrell Malacia is also expected to join Turkish side Eyupspor on a loan contract.
The Manchester United manager believes he has cleared the way for a more positive future and can now continue preparing for Sunday's Manchester Derby.
Onana was excluded from the starting lineup in United's Premier League opening matches against Arsenal and Fulham. He then made a series of mistakes again in the humiliating defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.
This led to him being left out once more in United's Premier League victory over Burnley. Subsequently, Manchester United signed 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens for £18.2 million on transfer deadline day.
Insiders stated that in the final days before the international break, Onana showed a lack of engagement and interest in working for the team, and even refused to acknowledge his head coach during training sessions.
As a result, Amorim was more than happy to let Onana leave, keeping Senne Lammens, out-of-form Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, and 39-year-old Tom Heaton in the squad.
Amorim now has to decide whether to give Senne Lammens a debut opportunity in the Manchester Derby or temporarily continue with Bayindir.
