Rasmus Højlund is reluctant to leave Manchester United this summer, but he may have to transfer in order to secure regular playing time this season.

Following Benjamin Šeško's arrival from RB Leipzig, Højlund's future has become uncertain, with links to AC Milan emerging.

The Danish forward has made it clear to club officials both publicly and privately that he prefers to stay at Old Trafford.

However, after the 22-year-old was left on the bench in Saturday's pre-season friendly against Fiorentina – with Šeško watching from the stands after making an appearance before the game kicked off – the 22-year-old is weighing up his options.

The club will not force Højlund to leave. However, they are open to offers and will consider both permanent transfers and loan deals.

Højlund is caught in a dilemma about leaving Manchester United. He chose to join the club after striving to secure a transfer to his childhood-supported team.

He performed excellently during the pre-season tour in the United States and scored in the 4-1 victory over Bournemouth in Chicago. After the game, Højlund stated that his "plan is very clear: to stay and fight for my place".

But after not getting a single minute of playing time against Fiorentina, with three years left on his contract, his stance has softened.

His agent has explored other options, including talks with AC Milan, but the final arrangement will be decided by Højlund.
