Recently, when appearing as a guest on the Camel Live program, Jamie Carragher shared his views on Liverpool’s performance.
Carragher said: “I previously criticized Liverpool for playing like a basketball team, and now that comment has come true again, becoming a problem for them. This kind of one-sided back-and-forth attacking and defending is not advisable in football matches, let alone when Chelsea was short-handed—Liverpool should have won a game like this.”
“When the ball was switched to the other side, Liverpool’s left winger actually ran behind the full-back! Andy Robertson is a very experienced player, but in that situation, I’m not sure if he handled it properly. Right now, it’s far too easy to break through Liverpool’s defense and charge into their penalty area. Chelsea’s home ground is certainly a tough place to play, but with the lineup Chelsea fielded at that time, Liverpool should have won this game, especially after leveling the score to 1-1.”
“I expressed my concerns about Liverpool’s style of play to the manager a long time ago, and he definitely has a deeper understanding of this than I do. Obviously, Arne Slot is an extremely excellent coach. However, compared to last season’s team that combined top-tier strength with a pragmatic style, this current Liverpool side has added some ‘star power’ through new signings, yet there has been no improvement in the attacking end, and they have even lost a lot in terms of defense.”
“I think for Liverpool’s manager, while the Reds had a smooth ride last season, now he really has to show his quality and prove his worth. He did a great job last season and won the Premier League title—that was incredible. But now the team has some problems that must be solved, and it will be very interesting to see how Slot sets out to address them.”
“The key is not the losses themselves, but the performance in the games—there have been signs of this since the first day of the season. In the second half of the match against Newcastle United, Liverpool was completely dominated by the opponent, and Newcastle was even down to 10 men at that time; this kind of situation should never have happened. In the game against Crystal Palace, the opponent created 7 clear-cut chances, which is more than the number of missed chances any other team in the Premier League has conceded this season—and yet Liverpool are the defending champions.”
“So, Liverpool’s losing streak didn’t come out of nowhere. It doesn’t surprise me at all, and the manager must solve these problems.”
