Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, a 28-year-old player for Liverpool, has tragically died in a traffic accident early today in Zamora Province, Spain. The incident occurred at kilometer 65 of the A-52 highway, in the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria. According to 112 emergency service witnesses, Jota and his 26-year-old brother André—also a professional footballer—were involved in a crash where their vehicle lost control, caught fire, and ignited surrounding vegetation.
Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the Reds, helping them win the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League during his tenure. The Portuguese international, capped 43 times for his country, was widely regarded as one of Europe’s most clinical forwards.
According to reports from local media in Zamora Province, the Civil Traffic Guard, Zamora Province firefighters, and the Emergency Coordination Center for Health Emergencies were dispatched to the scene immediately, deploying medical emergency teams and medical staff from health centers. However, they could only confirm the death of two young men at the scene.
