According to an official statement from Barcelona, Gavi has undergone meniscus repair surgery and is expected to be sidelined for 4 to 5 months.
For Gavi, this is undoubtedly devastating news, as the Spanish international will not be able to return to action before 2025. According to the medical announcement released by the club, after completing arthroscopic surgery on the medial meniscus of his right knee performed by Dr. Juan Carlos Monllor this afternoon, the player will need “four to five months of rest and recovery.”
This news has dealt a heavy blow to everyone at the club—especially to the lead surgeon, who is the same doctor that performed Gavi’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery two years ago. During the arthroscopic examination, it was discovered that the actual condition of Gavi’s right knee was worse than anticipated, forcing the need for a more intensive reconstructive surgery.
When the lead surgeon informed Gavi that his injury was far more severe than initially judged, the young player was left almost devastated. He was acutely aware that he would face a prolonged absence, and might even miss this summer’s World Cup campaign.
Gavi will not be able to return to the pitch until at least next February—and that is only on the premise that his recovery goes smoothly without any unforeseen complications.
Clearly, this is also a severe blow to head coach Hansi Flick, who will be without his key midfield core for the coming months. When the German manager learned that his prized academy graduate would be sidelined for an extended period, he was among those hit the hardest.
