FC Barcelona is close to reaching an agreement with Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong on a contract extension, with the new deal set to run until June 30, 2029. The negotiations have now entered the document exchange phase, and all final formalities are expected to be completed within the next few days.
After being signed by Club President Joan Laporta, Vice President Rafa Yuste, and other board members, all procedures are likely to be officially finalized within a week. The process of this contract extension negotiation has been more efficient and smooth than previous ones, with De Jong’s new lawyer-agent Ledur playing a key role in facilitating the progress.
In line with Barça’s updated salary structure, the terms of De Jong’s new contract will be similar to those of other key players in the team. His annual salary is expected to match that of Pedri, at approximately 12 million euros. This figure is comparable to the salary levels of players such as Dani Olmo (signed from RB Leipzig last summer), Ferran Torres, and Ronald Araujo. It is lower than the wages of Robert Lewandowski (the team’s top earner), Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and Marc-André ter Stegen, among others.
Once De Jong’s contract extension is completed, the club will turn its attention to addressing the contract situations of Eric García and Andreas Christensen. On García’s side, preliminary communications have already been initiated through his agent Ivan de la Peña. Although the defender considered leaving during last season’s winter transfer window, head coach Hansi Flick has successfully reignited his desire to stay at the club. As a versatile defensive player, García has demonstrated solid ability across multiple defensive positions and has clearly expressed his willingness to continue playing for Barça.
Christensen’s situation is more complicated: his contract also expires on June 30. Plagued by injuries, the Danish defender experienced inconsistent form last season. The club’s management is taking a cautious stance on this matter, and his performance this season will be a key factor in determining his future.
