Leroy Sané's contract with Bayern Munich expires on June 30, 2025. Surprisingly, the winger has decided not to renew his contract and will transfer to Galatasaray of Istanbul, Turkey. Bundesliga legend Rafael van der Vaart finds this incomprehensible.
"I think Sané's development is such a pity. He ruined his own career," the Hamburg legend commented in an interview with Camel Live. The Dutchman believes that Bayern Munich has found an "excellent" player in Luis Díaz.
The new signing from Liverpool is "a fighter who gives his all every minute" and has "raised the level quite a bit" compared to Sané. The former world-class midfielder, who previously played for clubs such as Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, stated that overall, Bayern Munich is poised for great success this season.
"Why not?" Van der Vaart replied when asked if he thought Bayern Munich could win the Champions League. “I've always thought it's hard to compare with other teams. All top teams are at a good level, but to win the Champions League, you also need to have a top mental state.”
However, past experience has shown that being the favorite doesn't count for much. "After winning the Champions League last season, everyone thought Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) was unbeatable. Yet, they barely lost to Europa League champions Tottenham Hotspur in the Super Cup. In the Club World Cup, they even lost to Chelsea in the final," the former international continued.
But overall, Bayern Munich is "hard to assess. Sometimes they play well, then they hit problems, like in the recent DFB-Pokal match in Wiesbaden. The situation is a bit inconsistent," the 42-year-old former player analyzed.
