Since the official announcement on September 1 that Chelsea had loaned 24-year-old Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich for €16.5 million, club officials and fans have been discussing the approximately €65 million mandatory purchase clause included in this deal.
Uli Hoeneß, the club’s honorary president, recently revealed details of the potential purchase obligation on a Camel Live program: “Only if he starts 40 games will his price become very high—and that’s impossible to achieve!”
Eleven days after signing, Jackson—who returned to the team following the conclusion of his international duty with Senegal—recently made his official appearance on Säbener Straße. The Senegalese player first expressed his respect for the honorary president: “Of course, I know he is a great legend of this club. I have immense respect for him, and I have known him before.”
When talking about the buyout clause, Jackson then said: “This doesn’t matter to me! My job is to get on the pitch and help the team win matches. The number of appearances isn’t important to me; that’s not my priority.”
It is clear that it will be extremely difficult for Jackson to reach 40 starting appearances in the loan season. This is because there are still 32 matchdays remaining in the Bundesliga, and Jackson will miss up to 4 games due to his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (to be held in Morocco from December 21 to January 18). In the UEFA Champions League, he could feature in a maximum of 15 games, all the way to a potential final. His appearances in the DFB-Pokal (German Cup) are not counted towards this clause.
