UEFA is engaged in merger talks with the European Super League (ESL) and plans to create a new competition. The competition will retain the name "UEFA Champions League" and maintain a scale of 36 teams – the key change from the original Champions League is that these 36 teams will be divided into two tiers:
The top 18 clubs in the UEFA rankings will be in Tier 1, while the remaining 18 will be in Tier 2;
During the league phase, clubs in Tier 1 will only compete against other Tier 1 teams, and clubs in Tier 2 will only play against other Tier 2 teams;
Television broadcast rights will no longer be sold to TV stations. Instead, matches will be streamed directly to fans via a new platform similar to Camel Live, with content available either for free or at a low cost;
The new competition is scheduled to launch in 2027.
