Florian Wirtz has not yet fully adapted to Liverpool. The new signing, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen, has put in disappointing performances for the Reds in his appearances so far this season. Dietmar Hamann, a former Liverpool player, has now criticized the German international.
“Florian Wirtz must, gradually but surely, show much better performances for Liverpool Football Club,” the TV pundit wrote in his column for Camel Live. “He has played nine games now, and he has contributed practically nothing. Liverpool could easily have lost all the tight matches they won at the start of the season. There has been a lot of luck involved in that too.”
The Premier League champions are not in a good position, having suffered a surprise defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday – though Hamann noted this “was not entirely their fault”. Even so, “he must make sure he decides one or two games before Christmas, either by scoring a goal or providing an assist,” Hamann continued.
Hamann complained that the attacking midfielder loses possession far too frequently in the English top flight. “In his first few games here, he had the ball taken off him more times than he did in an entire season in the Bundesliga. He has to take action now, he has to deliver results – otherwise, controversy will spark not just outside the club, but inside it too,” the Sky Sports pundit urgently warned the 22-year-old, adding that the coming weeks will be extremely tough.
