In the Premier League, Manchester United lost 1-3 to Brentford. If Manchester United decides to sack manager Ruben Amorim, former England boss Gareth Southgate will be among the candidates to take over.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a minority shareholder of Manchester United, has recently made direct contact with Southgate. When the club appointed Amorim last year, the former England manager was already a candidate for the Red Devils’ managerial position, but he did not consider returning to club management at that time.
Despite Amorim’s dismal record of only securing 33 points in 34 Premier League games since taking charge of Manchester United, the club’s senior management is still reluctant to sack him easily. However, if a decision to dismiss him is ultimately made, the management prefers to act after November 1st to reduce the compensation amount. Although Amorim has publicly stated that he is willing to leave without claiming his termination fee, sacking him at this stage is still expected to cost approximately £12 million.
After losing to Brentford last night (Beijing time), Manchester United have only accumulated 7 points after 6 rounds of the Premier League. In a post-match interview with the media, Amorim also spoke openly about his managerial future. The Portuguese manager said: “Folks, what I say after every defeat is pretty much the same—I can’t tell you any more than that. Sometimes we see the team perform really well, and you can see progress, but other times you don’t see that progress, which doesn’t give you the confidence to say Manchester United is getting back on track.”
“So, it’s always the same topic. Everything depends on the next game. So, let’s work hard to win the next game and make improvements in certain areas. But I think it’s clear that we can create more chances. Sometimes we can get into the final third more often, but other times our handling of the ball there is a bit lacking in quality. These are all areas we need to improve on.”
In addition to Southgate, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola are also on the list of potential successors.
