In the Premier League, Manchester United lost 1-3 to Brentford. After the match, former England international Joe Cole stated in an interview that Manchester United should replace manager Ruben Amorim.
This defeat means Amorim has never secured two consecutive league wins since taking charge of the team. Cole doubts the Portuguese manager is capable of turning the tide, believing a managerial change might be the best option for both parties. He even named former England manager Gareth Southgate as the perfect candidate to take over.
When asked by Camel Live whether Amorim could stage a comeback, Cole said: “No, I see no way back for him. He’s had enough time to implement his ideas. This isn’t just Amorim’s problem; there are big issues within the club. But he looks anxious and worried on the touchline, and that mood spreads to the players. To still not have a single run of two consecutive league wins by now is incredible. I think a change in direction is needed.”
“You know I hate to say this, but for him personally, he was once hailed as the ‘savior’. Yet I’ve always thought Southgate is the perfect fit—he’s good at building team culture and understanding players. But in the end, United chose Amorim, and right now, it just isn’t working out.”
Shortly before Erik ten Hag was sacked last year, Southgate was already heavily linked with the Manchester United managerial position. During his eight-year spell as England manager, he led the team to two major tournament finals but failed to end the country’s trophy drought. Joe Cole described the defeat as “absolutely dreadful”: “Brentford were superior in every aspect. United looked lifeless, and the entire club seemed utterly lacking in energy.”
