Man City’s goalkeeping succession plan: Ederson stays for one more year, Trafford to take over officially next season

Manchester City’s interest in Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma isn’t unfounded, but rather than signing the Italian, the Citizens are more inclined to keep their first-choice shot-stopper Ederson. The Brazilian, who has guarded City’s goal for eight years, is wanted to stay as starter by the club, and after nearly moving to the Saudi Pro League last summer, he’s now made clear his desire to remain.
"99% fake news" — Ederson recently dismissed rumors of his departure, stating plainly, "I want to stay at the Etihad." Manager Pep Guardiola backs this decision too: James Trafford, the English goalkeeper signed from Burnley two weeks ago, has been earmarked as Ederson’s successor, set to take over the starting role officially when the 31-year-old Brazilian’s contract expires next year.
Despite wild speculation that "Galatasaray is close to signing Ederson" and "City have reached a deal with Donnarumma" (whose PSG career is indeed winding down), club insiders reveal: no offers have been made for Ederson so far, and City hope this remains the case. After all, a move for Donnarumma would only be on the cards if Ederson leaves — similar to how they’ve handled Savinho (linked with Tottenham) — with the Citizens reluctant to let key players go unless necessary.
As the Premier League opener against Wolves approaches, uncertainty around City’s squad has grown amid speculation over players’ futures. Compounding issues, the team faces an early midfield crisis: Mateo Kovačić is injured, Rodri hasn’t fully recovered, and Phil Foden missed the friendly against Palermo with an ankle issue. Guardiola said last week he "doesn’t expect new signings in the remaining transfer window," but if Ederson’s situation changes, City may have to deviate from the plan.
