Liverpool Football Club has officially announced the signing of 22-year-old midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The talented attacking midfielder has penned a long-term contract with the Reds, having completed his medical and agreed personal terms. Wirtz becomes another significant addition to Jurgen Klopp's squad this summer, reuniting with former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong at Anfield.
Regarded as one of the brightest young stars in world football, Wirtz has shone since joining Leverkusen from Cologne's academy over the past five and a half years. He made his Bundesliga debut in May 2020 at just 17 years and 15 days old, scoring his first top-flight goal weeks later against Bayern Munich. From the 2020-21 season onward, he became a key figure in Leverkusen's starting lineup and one of the Bundesliga's most exciting talents.
Wirtz made his Germany national team debut in September 2021 but suffered a serious injury in March the following year, sidelined for several months. However, he made a strong comeback, helping Leverkusen achieve a historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in the 2023-24 season while reaching the Europa League final. The team remained unbeaten throughout the Bundesliga campaign, with Wirtz delivering a phenomenal performance.
