Government of West Bengal: Messi Event Poorly Organized – Local DCP and Stadium CEO Suspended

The Government of West Bengal issued a statement announcing the handling results of the fiasco during Messi’s India visit, with the local Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and the stadium’s responsible official suspended.

Government of West Bengal’s Statement:

In pursuance of the preliminary report (dated 15/12/2025) of the Enquiry Committee constituted to look into the incident at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan (VYBK, Salt Lake) on 13th December 2025, the following administrative actions have been taken:
1.Shri Rajeev Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP) of West Bengal has been served a show-cause notice, requiring him to clarify within 24 hours of receiving the notice why such serious mismanagement and lapses occurred at the stadium that day, and why proper coordination with relevant stakeholders (including the private organizer) was not carried out to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.

2.Departmental proceedings have been initiated against Shri Aneesh Sarkar (IPS), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), for his reported negligence in duties and responsibilities on the event day; he is hereby placed under suspension until the enquiry is completed.

3.Shri Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Principal Secretary of the Youth Affairs & Sports Department, has been show-caused and asked to submit a written clarification on why mismanagement and lapses occurred on the event day.

4.The services of Shri Deb Kumar Nandan, WBCS (Exe) (Retd.), CEO of VYBK, are hereby withdrawn with immediate effect, as he bears responsibility for the mismanagement and lapses in the proper conduct of the event.
