LALIGA officially announced that due to recent uncertainties in Spain, the La Liga overseas match between Villarreal and FC Barcelona has been ultimately canceled.
Previously, UEFA approved the proposal to host the La Liga overseas match but stated that it did not support the move. Earlier tonight, the organizer of the overseas match released a statement, noting that insufficient preparation time made it difficult to properly arrange this large-scale event.
LALIGA officially announces that after communicating with the organizers of the official La Liga match in Miami, we have finally decided to cancel this event in light of the uncertainties that have emerged in Spain in recent weeks.
LALIGA expresses deep regret over this decision, as this project would have been a historic opportunity and milestone for the international expansion of Spanish football. Holding an official match outside the country would have been a key step in promoting the league’s global development, helping to enhance the clubs’ international influence, elevate the players’ profiles, and increase the visibility of Spanish football in the strategic U.S. market.
This project was fully compliant with all relevant regulations of football associations and did not affect the integrity of the competition; this has been confirmed by the authorities responsible for supervision and enforcement. However, the event was ultimately opposed due to other reasons.
In today’s increasingly competitive global environment, leagues such as the Premier League and the Champions League continue to expand their influence and revenue capacity. Innovative initiatives like this one are crucial to ensuring the sustainable development and growth of Spanish football. Abandoning such opportunities will weaken the ability to generate new revenue, limit clubs’ investment and competitiveness, and reduce the international exposure of the entire Spanish football system.
Finally, LALIGA would like to thank all clubs for their willingness to cooperate and support in this project, as well as their commitment to the league’s continuous development. The La Liga alliance will continue to work hard to bring Spanish football to every corner of the world, promoting an open, modern, and competitive vision that benefits clubs, players, and fans alike.
