Camel Live Exclusive: A former England and Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape.

The suspect, who played for the England national team in the 2010s, was detained at Stansted Airport following allegations by his former partner.

Police stated that he has been released on bail pending further inquiries.

The former Premier League star was stopped at the passport control checkpoint at Stansted Airport.

It is understood that his details showed he was wanted by police over an alleged attempted rape reported by his ex-partner some time ago.

Border officials detained him on Sunday evening before he could board a budget airline flight.

A source said: “He was going through passport control when border officials quietly pulled him aside. Something was clearly wrong, and he was taken away.”

Essex Police launched an investigation after the star’s ex-girlfriend filed a complaint several weeks ago.

She alleges that he attempted to rape her during their relationship.

Following the report, Essex Police traveled to Stansted Airport to arrest the suspect, whose name cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.

He was taken to a local police station where he was fingerprinted, had a DNA sample taken, and was photographed.

The suspect, who represented England in the 2010s, was held in custody until his lawyer arrived and detectives conducted questioning.

He was released on bail after being detained for several hours, pending further investigations.

The airport arrest has sparked confusion as he is understood to have attended several public events recently.

A source said: “It’s bizarre. He’s been in the public eye quite a bit lately, yet he was arrested at the airport.”

Meanwhile, the victim has been interviewed by specialist sexual offences officers and provided with counseling and support.

Essex Police said: "A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and released on bail. He is due to appear in court again in late February 2026, and our investigation continues."
