In Matchweek 6 of the Premier League, when Arsenal visited Newcastle United, referee Jarred Gillett rescinded the initial penalty awarded to Arsenal after reviewing the VAR footage in the first half. The Premier League has officially provided an explanation for this decision.
In the 16th minute of the game, Arsenal forward Viktor Gyökeres broke into the penalty area, made contact with Newcastle United goalkeeper Pope, and then fell to the ground. Referee Jarred Gillett initially awarded a penalty, but later cancelled the penalty decision after reviewing the VAR footage.
The Premier League officially explained that after the VAR review, the referee overturned the penalty that was originally awarded to Arsenal.
The referee stated: “After review, the Newcastle goalkeeper touched the ball first; there was no foul. The final decision is a drop ball.”
