In Matchweek 14 of the Premier League, Chelsea visited Leeds United. This game was the first of 15 matches the Blues will play in December and January. Regarding this, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca stated that this intense schedule will largely determine the fate of their season.
On the dense fixture list in December and January
Maresca said: “Teams that can maintain stability in December and January are likely to be the ones contending for the title in February and March. If we can keep our current position by February or March, then we will become title contenders. But it’s only December now – it’s too early for me.”
“I remember last December, the first game we lost was at home to Fulham on the 26th, and after that, we started to drop points. This period is tough for every team, especially those involved in European competitions, because you have to play every three days.”
When the match density is this high, there is only one goal – which is what Maresca and his coaching staff have been working towards at Chelsea’s training ground.
Maresca added: “Our top priority over the next two months is to stay stable. Starting today, we have 8 games in December. We may also have 8 in January. These are the two most difficult months. If we can get through them and remain competitive in February and March, we will definitely contend for the title.”
