The English midfielder has been on the bench for Manchester United's first two Premier League matches this season and has not been given any playing time. In the recently concluded second round of the Premier League, United manager Rúben Amorim named Mainoo on the bench once again.
As a result, after being gradually marginalized by manager Amorim, the English midfielder has set his sights on leaving Manchester United. The midfielder has not played a single minute in the team's two matches this season, and when he returned from injury in December last year, he was demoted from a first-choice midfielder to a substitute.
Regarding Mainoo's situation, Manchester United is open to a suitable deal to let him leave. However, with the transfer window set to close next Monday, the 20-year-old player may lack attractive suitors.
Including pre-season games, Mainoo has only started twice in United's last seven matches. Currently, Mainoo looks gloomy and even somewhat despondent; the smile on his face has been replaced by a disappointed frown. Mainoo is no longer the "untouchable" player he was for United last year, and the club's management has recognized that talks over a new contract have also reached a deadlock.
Last summer, Mainoo started for England in their European Championship final defeat to Spain—less than two months after he scored for United in their FA Cup final victory over Manchester City. Yet his career has stagnated under Amorim, who stated that Mainoo is competing with captain Bruno Fernandes for a spot in the team.
The head coach has not yet found a role for Mainoo in his 3-4-3 formation. Amorim believes that this Manchester United Academy graduate does not have the ability to be a starting midfielder for the club, and has not been sufficiently impressed by the player's performance in the attacking third.
