Recent media reports have updated the transfer progress between Barcelona and Manchester City defender Nathan Aké.
The January transfer window has opened, and Barcelona sporting director Deco is facing two tough challenges: on one hand, he needs to adjust Marc-André ter Stegen’s salary structure to avoid the German goalkeeper causing unrest on the bench; on the other hand, he must meet head coach Hansi Flick’s most pressing need – signing a reliable centre-back before the end of the season.
Following Iñigo Martínez’s departure, Flick was forced to convert Gerard Martín into a left centre-back. The young player has improved in ball-playing ability and overall performance, but the Barcelona coaching staff know a solid defender who can truly hold the position is a must to compete for the Champions League. With Andreas Christensen sidelined by injury and Ronald Araújo in recovery, the winter window offers a chance to strengthen, and Barcelona have set their sights on Nathan Aké, who is understood to be open to a transfer.
The Dutch international has gradually lost his starting spot under Pep Guardiola, a position that was never truly secure for him. However, he delivered impressive performances in his early days at Man City, capable of playing both full-back and centre-back, with the ability to surge forward and contribute to attacks, scoring around three goals per season on average.
Standing at just 1.82 metres, Aké boasts excellent aerial ability and is renowned for his skill in beating high presses. His rich Premier League experience, Netherlands national team career and mature age of turning 31 soon all mean he can be a ready-made defensive reinforcement for Barcelona.
The core issue, though, is whether Barcelona can afford to sign a player whose contract runs until 2027 – the answer is clearly no. In addition, Man City’s management led by Ferran Soriano never offer discounts or transfer favours to any club, and Barcelona is no exception, while Barça is seemingly only willing to take Aké on loan until June 30 this year.
If this deal goes ahead eventually, the final decision will rest with the player, and the transfer is expected to be clarified after the Spanish Super Cup.
