During this summer transfer window, Real Madrid had the chance to strengthen their midfield but ultimately remained inactive. After signing three defenders (Carreras, Heuzen, Alexander-Arnold) and one striker (Mastantuno), the White Blancos regarded former Real Sociedad midfielder Zubimendi as their top target for midfield reinforcement. However, the club was unwilling to pay €60 million for him, and the Spanish international eventually joined Arsenal, where he has since delivered impressive performances.
Real Madrid decided to give up on the 26-year-old Basque midfielder due to his age and the high transfer fee, but the club is well aware that with Kroos and Modrić leaving one after another, it must quickly strengthen the core midfield position. 21-year-old Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has become the Galácticos’ top target.
The young English talent currently has a market value of as high as €45 million, but Real Madrid has learned that it will take at least €80 million to sign him. However, for young talents that fit the club’s recent transfer policy, transfer fees have never been an obstacle. Wharton’s contract with Crystal Palace runs until 2029, and the club, aware that multiple top European clubs are eyeing him, is planning to offer an improved contract to keep the player for as long as possible.
Real Madrid’s scouting system evaluation shows that Wharton’s technical characteristics are very similar to Modrić: both have strong dynamic coverage ability, pose a great threat with late runs, and although they are left-footed, they are equally skilled with their right feet. Notably, he currently leads all midfielders in creating big chances in the Premier League this season.
