In the Premier League, Manchester United lost 1-3 to Brentford. After the match, United manager Ruben Amorim spoke to Camel Live.
Reporter: Ruben, you mentioned earlier that you needed to build momentum after last weekend’s win. Does a result like today’s make it even more frustrating?
Amorim: Yeah, the feeling is always the same. Of course, we wanted to win. But I don’t think we took control of the game. We played completely at Brentford’s pace, really passive. Whether it was first balls, second balls, or set pieces, all the key moments went against us. So, losing again is really tough, but we have to focus on the next game.
Reporter: Last week against Chelsea, we saw Manchester United show great fighting spirit. Did you see that spirit today?
Amorim: Hmm, there were moments when we had it. But we could have done better – that’s the key.
Reporter: So far this season, you’ve conceded a goal in every league game. It seems like similar issues keep repeating every week – how worrying is that for you as manager?
Amorim: Yeah, the first goal came from a long ball by them right after a possession recovery. We specifically practiced this in training this week. The same goes for set pieces – we also did targeted training for that. So, we actually knew they’d play long balls and then create chances with one touch, which is exactly how the goal happened today. But we definitely practiced this week. We need to do better.
Reporter: This week, with no midweek games to disrupt us this season, the players had plenty of time to work on things in training – why do you think they couldn’t put what they practiced into action on the pitch today?
Amorim: Sigh, it’s the same story today. We couldn’t play our own style. There were only moments when we took control and pushed them back, but for most of the game, it was the same old thing. It’s still about the second balls and first balls. We have to play at our own pace instead of being dragged along by the opposition, but they did a better job at that today.
Reporter: So far this season, the team’s results have been inconsistent. You must be well aware now that as Manchester United manager, every defeat could leave you just one step away from the next crisis. How do you deal with that?
Amorim: At a club like this, the feeling of losing is always the same – it really hurts. We can only focus on the next game.
Reporter: The next game is against Sunderland. How important is it to get a good result in this game and head into the international break with some positive momentum?
Amorim: At this club, every single game is crucial. It’s not just home games or specific matches – we need to win every game, but right now we’re not doing that.
