After Amorim led his team to a defeat in the Manchester Derby last Sunday, he retained the support of Manchester United's board. Having lost 0-3 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, the Red Devils are currently 14th in the Premier League table and have only claimed one win in their first four league matches. This represents the club's worst season start in 33 years.
Since taking charge of the team in November last year, Amorim has secured just 8 victories in 31 Premier League games. Nevertheless, Manchester United's directors still maintain confidence in him, and no expiration date has been set for this trust. However, the club's senior management acknowledges that the team's performance must improve, and they believe the side has made a certain degree of progress since last season.
Manchester United shareholder Sir Ratcliffe thinks this current Man Utd squad is capable of qualifying for the Champions League this season. If the team fails to secure Champions League qualification as the season progresses, more serious discussions will be held regarding Amorim's job security.
For the time being, though, senior figures at Manchester United argue that the team has either achieved sufficient progress or demonstrated enough potential for improvement, and they have not yet started searching for alternative candidates. Amorim is prepared for a review at the end of the season – a process pre-planned back in May – and despite the Red Devils' current form, there is no sign that this review will be brought forward.
Prior to the Manchester Derby, Amorim's team led the Premier League in several statistical categories, including expected goals (xG), total number of shots, and touches inside the opposition's penalty area. In the match against Manchester City, Man Utd even had a higher possession rate than their opponents, and the number of shots from both sides was fairly close. These performances have led some senior Man Utd officials to believe that the team is only slightly deficient in details during the early stages of the new season.
