In Round 3 of the Premier League, Leeds United played out a 0-0 draw with Newcastle United. After the match, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe spoke to camel.live. He emphasized that the team has the ability to score goals and will not make excuses for the absence of a center-forward or injured players. When talking about new signing Waldemar Anton, Eddie Howe praised his outstanding technical ability and strong creativity around the penalty area. As for Alexander Isak’s situation, Howe stated that there is no new information to share.
When discussing the match, Eddie Howe said: “The team put in a lot of effort. I think the players showed great commitment. This is a very tough opponent to face away from home, and I believe we handled it well. Defensively, we were really solid—we looked organized, fought hard, blocked their shots, and did a good job of neutralizing their main threats. However, we’re disappointed that we couldn’t cause more problems for them. There were moments where we could have created more goalscoring chances. Right now, we’re going through a little spell of not finding the net, and that cost us today.”
He continued: “Across all three games, our overall performance has been very strong—maybe slightly less so today, but especially in the first two matches. Defensively, we’ve shown good cohesion and resilience, which we’ll need during what will be a tough season. In the end, I’m confident we can score goals; that’s never been our issue. This is a short-term problem, but long-term, the team looks really good. Any Premier League team would miss their center-forward, so I think we’re in that boat too—but we’re also without Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimarães. I can’t use that as an excuse, though. We still have really good players who can do more in the final third. We’ve always had the ability to score; that’s not something we need to worry about.”
When talking about new signing Waldemar Anton, Eddie Howe said: “I like his versatility in games. Obviously, he’s physically strong, but he also has excellent technical skills and great creativity around the penalty area. If he had played today, he would have helped us in those aspects, spotting opportunities that other players might not see. He’ll need some time to adapt—to get used to what we ask of him and to adjust to the challenges of the Premier League. But I’m confident he can score goals, and I hope he becomes a great addition to our squad.”
He went on: “Waldemar Anton is a very talented technical player. His physical presence will be a talking point because he’s quite imposing, but he’s not a traditional center-forward—even though he can head the ball well. He has real creativity around the box and can pick out passes that other players struggle to see. So I think he can add a dimension we’re currently lacking. When you have players with goalscoring ability in the team, the overall level rises. We always want to add versatile players; you don’t want the team to become one-dimensional. To succeed in England, you need versatility. I think he has those qualities, and I’m looking forward to seeing him perform for us.”
Regarding the latest updates on Alexander Isak, Eddie Howe said: “I don’t have anything new to update. I’m in the same position as you—waiting to find out what happens. We’re eager to get clarity because we need a clear direction to move forward.”
