East Bengal starting XI

The Red and Gold have quite a few first-team names in their line-up.

Kick-off!

Two huddles, two sets of prayers, and two hurrahs. The season’s first Kolkata Derby is underway! East Bengal gets the ball rolling, attacking from right to left.

2’ EBFC 0-0 MBSG; Intent from the off!

A packed Kalyani stadium is witness to these two young sides of the Kolkata giants. Both sides have launched the ball forward, hoping to find their forwards, but no luck so far.

9’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; GOALLL! Jesin TK!

The skipper for the day wraps up a good team effort to give East Bengal the lead! Beautiful interplay between Edmund and Sayan outside the box after which the latter cuts it back for a lurking Jesin who just taps it in.

14’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Goalie down

Looks like the Mohun Bagan ‘keeper is down with an injury. Deeprobhat is getting treatment on the field.

15’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Mariners fan still cheering

The match is barely 20 minutes old so naturally, the Mariners’ faithful getting behind their young side. East Bengal fans, meanwhile, loud and proud at the Kalyani. A win in this match will certainly do wonders to their position in the CFL table.

16’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Midfield battle

From these opening 15 minutes or so, one can say that Bino George’s side is crowding the midfield with players. This is cutting Mohun Bagan’s attacks in the middle of the pitch. Hence, long balls are being used from time to time by the Deggie Cardozo-coached side.

24’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Sayan almost provides

Sayan Banerjee runs down the right flank and puts in a cross but the goalkeeper is once again there to thwart the attempt.

26’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Block!

Kiyan receives the ball and tries to find Suhail Bhat with an outside of the boot through ball but an East Bengal defender dives in with a good block.

29’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; East Bengal in control, Edmund shoots!

The Red and Gold Brigade is pressing high and suffocating the Mariners for space in their half. Edmund gets a chance to drop his shoulders and go for the shot, but he gets underneath the ball and sends it flying into the stands. Water break now.

31’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; WHAT A CHANCE! POST!

Right after the break, Suhail Bhat is played through on goal but a bad touch saw the ball go beyond his reach. The East Bengal goalie Debjit came in flying and parried the ball but it found Kiyan. The former Chennaiyin FC forward slammed it right at the far post and failed to send the ball in an open goal. He went for power there.

33’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Tempers flaring

Mohun Bagan skipper Sandeep Malik and East Bengal’s David get in a slight pushing match. Tempers flare for a second, acknowledged by a rise in the decibel level from the stands, but the tension is shortlived. Ball gets rolling soon after.

35’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Another injury for Mohun Bagan

Salahudheen is down after copping a blow when he went for the ball against East Bengal’s Bikram. He looks to be really distressed as a stretcher has been brought in. Looks like the midfielder’s derby is over.

41’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Suhail irate!

Provat Lakra becomes a literal obstacle to Suhail as the forward tries to get the ball back but the defender is not giving even an inch to the Mariners’ striker. Suhail thought the referee would perhaps point to the spot for a foul but it was not to be.

42’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; Dippendu’s challenge on David!
Dippendu and Edmund exchange words. Provat comes in and there’s some pushing going on between the players. Dippendu challenged for the ball against David with a slight extended elbow. However, the Mohun Bagan looks to intentionally kick the East Bengal forward in the head with a boot. But the referee doesn’t seem to see that in real time. The game goes on.

45’- EBFC 1-0 MBSG; SAVE!

What a colossal miss from David! A poor, callous pass from MBSG goalkeeper which gave David the chance to go for the ball. He was one-on-one with the ‘keeper but his shot was saved by Deeprobhat. A corner for East Bengal, where the ‘keeper once again comes out on top.

45+6’- EBFC 2-0 MBSG; GOALLLLLL! SAYAN!!!

What a seamless goal! Much deserved for Sayan Banerjee! Edmund and Sayan, against the run of play, marched up the pitch. Edmund found Sayan, who skipped past the ‘keeper and easily passed it into the open goal. East Bengal two goals up right before half-time.

Second half underway

Mohun Bagan, the trailing side, gets the ball rolling in the second half.

50’- EBFC 2-0 MBSG; Dorjee with a chance!

Great run from Dorjee Tamang to cut inside from the left flank to find himself outside of the box. He tees up a shot but another awry shot. He’s clearly displeased with him.

55’- EBFC 2-1 MBSG; GOALLLLLL! Castanha!!!

The efforts pay dividend! Leewan Castanha scores Mohun Bagan’s first goal as the fans erupt in jubilation! The ball was floated in from the corner, Dippendu jumped the highest to set it down for a free Castanha, who then smacked the ball and sent it between legs and into the back of the net.

62’- EBFC 2-1 MBSG; Suhail with a chance!

Suhail slowly showing what he’s capable of. He runs down the left flank, feints to send Suman Dey on the floor, and tries to find the far post with a shot but it whizzes past.

67’- EBFC 2-2 MBSG; GOALLLLL! KIYANNNN!

The homegrown boy has truly returned! He announces his return to Mohun Bagan with a goal which brings the score level! A cross comes in from the right side and he rises the highest to flick it towards the far post! Looks like Leewan Castanha with the assist.

69’- EBFC 3-2 MBSG; GOALLLLL! David scores!!!

East Bengal with the lead again!!! Aman CK puts in a perfect cross from the right and an unmarked David just has to head the ball into the back of the net to get East Bengal ahead in the match. He takes off his jersey in celebration and that yellow card will be worth it if East Bengal goes on to win this match.

83’- EBFC 3-2 MBSG; WHAT A MISS!

DAVID WITH A STINKER! He just had to pass it past the goalkeeper, a golden chance to put some distance between the two sides. But the forward skies it! Will this come back to bite the Red and Gold?

90’- EBFC 3-2 MBSG; Free-kick! Seven minutes added!

It’s Guite who fouls a Mohun Bagan player to concede a free-kick. Meanwhile, the board reads an additional seven minutes.

90+6’- EBFC 3-2 MBSG; Stoppage in play

East Bengal fans have started celebrating, burning paper to mimic moshals (torch), the club’s symbol and emblem. The referee is having a word with MBSG coach Deggie Cardozo, who seems frustrated.

FULL TIME; East Bengal 3-2 Mohun Bagan

That’s all! Bino George salutes the fans and goes straight down the tunnel. East Bengal takes the bragging rights of this Kolkata Derby against Mohun Bagan!
