After previously pulling off a major upset by eliminating Premier League giant Manchester United, League Two side Grimsby Town delivered another surprise in the EFL Cup. They claimed a 1-0 away upset victory over Championship club Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup Third Round, successfully advancing to the Fourth Round. This also marks Grimsby Town’s best performance in the EFL Cup since the 2001-02 season.
Approximately 6,000 Grimsby Town traveling supporters made the trip across Lincolnshire to South Yorkshire for the match. Due to dissatisfaction with the club’s ownership, many Sheffield Wednesday fans chose to boycott the game. As a result, at Sheffield Wednesday’s home ground, Hillsborough Stadium, the number of Grimsby’s away fans was almost twice that of the home supporters.
Grimsby Town finally broke the deadlock in the second half—Jaz Kabia headed home from a corner delivered by Staunton.

Later, the away side had a chance to extend their lead, but one goal was enough to seal the victory. Sheffield Wednesday had just lost to Bristol City in the EFL Championship last Saturday, and made 10 changes to their lineup for this match; in the end, they failed to pull a goal back.
The EFL Cup Round of 16 draw will take place next Wednesday.
