In Champions League Group Stage Round 6, Chelsea lost 2-1 to Atalanta away from home. After the match, Blues forward João Pedro was interviewed by Chelsea’s official website.
João Pedro said: “We're disappointed because we came here to win. We started well and scored first, but in the Champions League, if you give opponents chances and they can score, the game becomes very difficult – because they’re a strong team.”
“I think we controlled the game in the first half. We had a good start and chances to score more. I feel there was a 10-minute spell in the second half after they scored – the home fans' support gave them a big boost. In the Champions League, if you concede early in the second half and then a second goal, it’s hard to come back. We need to learn from this. We’re disappointed, but we have to focus on the next game.”
João Pedro admitted he was well aware of Atalanta’s threat at home.
João Pedro said: “The Champions League is tough not just away, but also at home, because you’re facing very strong teams – and Atalanta is a good side. In an instant, anyone can score, and that’s what makes the Champions League exciting.”
Despite the unsatisfactory result, the Brazilian player took some positives from scoring his first goal in the competition.
João Pedro stated: “I think Chelsea signed me to score goals. Although I scored my first Champions League goal, it’s not enough.”
