Eberl: If Neuer Had Stayed on the Line, He Might Have Saved Martinelli’s One-on-One

In this round’s Champions League blockbuster, Arsenal defeated Bayern Munich 3-1 at home. Bayern captain Manuel Neuer was dribbled past by the opponent after rushing off his line—a mistake that directly led to the team’s third goal.

After the match, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl discussed the goal in an interview with Camel Live: “If Neuer had chosen to stay on his line, it would have been a one-on-one situation, and he might have had a chance to make the save.

“However, he opted to rush out, and Martinelli clearly noticed his movement out of the corner of his eye. I had hoped Martinelli wouldn’t spot the charge, allowing Neuer to block the chance outright, but Martinelli sensed it sharply, then controlled the ball and dribbled past him.”

In addition, he talked about Harry Kane’s future, stating: “Kane feels very comfortable with us. We love him, and he is enjoying his time in Munich—so what’s holding him back?

“It would be wonderful if Kane stays beyond 2027, as he is in the best form of his career. He feels extremely at ease in the team and has fully adapted to our style of play. He was a pure goalscorer when he arrived, and now he has developed into a striker who participates in build-up play—he’s an all-round player.

“His achievements over the past decade or so, coupled with his continued progress at this age, are more than enough to prove that he will eventually secure a place in the Ballon d’Or voting.”
