Prediction: Senegal wins

While the absence of experienced defender Koulibaly does make this a slightly trickier task for the Senegalese defense, they should have more than enough quality to successfully shut down a side that scored only once in the group stages.

Senegal were one of the top defensive teams in the group stage, and we already know what they can do on the attacking end with the likes of Mane, Ndiaye and Jackson. Sudan look to be in for a tough night. Our Senegal vs Sudan prediction: Senegal to win to nil.

Senegal come into their round of 16 fixture in good form. They claimed a 3-0 win over Botswana in the opener, followed that up with a 1-1 draw with DR Congo and closed out the group with a 3-0 victory over Benin.

They’ve successfully been able to carry over the good performances that they showed in the lead up to this year’s AFCON.

In their last nine matches, the only defeat that Senegal suffered was a 2-0 loss to Brazil. In that same time, the Teranga Lions were victorious on seven occasions, including an 8-0 thrashing of Kenya just before the start of AFCON.

Senegal manager Pape Thiaw comes into this knockout round fixture with a clean bill of health. They will, however, be without the services of captain Kalidou Koulibaly, who was shown a straight red card against Benin after 71 minutes.

Strasbourg’s Mamadou Sarr and Lyon’s Moussa Niakhate are the most likely candidates to replace Koulibaly at the back. Elsewhere, Nicolas Jackson should return to the starting 11 after being rested in the team’s final group stage match.

Jackson spearheads what is one of the most fear-inducing front threes in the tournament. Sadio Mane, Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye compliment each other well with a dangerous combination of speed, technique and guile.

Sudan advanced as one of the four best third-placed teams. They kicked off their AFCON campaign with a convincing 3-0 loss to Algeria before scraping a 1-0 win over Equatorial Guinea.

Sudan got that win via an own-goal, despite not creating a single clear cut scoring chance and having just two shots on goal. They closed out the group with a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso.

The underdogs have managed just a single victory in their last eight games in AFCON, international friendly and World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Sudan don’t have any injury concerns to worry about, either. Special praise should go to goalkeeper Monged El Neel, who was instrumental in ensuring that his side kept a clean sheet against Equatorial Guinea and walked away with all three points.

El Neel was rested against Burkina Faso, but we expect him to be back between the posts for this huge match against Senegal.
