Prediction: Algeria wins
Algeria’s defense wasn’t really tested in their opener after Sudan were reduced to 10 men in the first half. The Fennec Foxes are sure to face a sterner test here against an in-form Burkina Faso with plenty of attacking weapons. Still, boasting the likes of Mahrez, Amoura and Maza, Algeria will always back themselves to get on the scoresheet.
They shouldn’t underestimate Burkina Faso though, as they have the ability to cause the favourites some problems on the counter with their pacey wingplay in the form of Ouattara and Traore. Our Algeria vs Burkina Faso prediction: Algeria wins and BTTS.

After Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring after just two minutes, a first half record card from Sudan all but sealed the three points for Algeria. They would go on to add two more goals in the second half to cruise to a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Prior to the start of AFCON 2025, Algeria were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Arab Cup by the UAE on penalties, although the Fennec Foxes took a completely different squad to that tournament.
The last time the usual senior team played was in a pair of international friendly games back in November. There, Algeria walked away with two wins – the first a 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe which was followed up by a 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia.
The two notable absences for manager Vladimir Petkovic are Amine Gouiri and goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz. Zinedine Zidane’s son Luca started between the sticks for Algeria in their opener and performed well when called upon. He should retain his spot for this game.
Stealing the Matchday 1 headlines was of course Riyad Mahrez. The former Leicester and Manchester City winger was at his clinical best, scoring a brace from his two shots taken.
The 33-year-old, now plying his trade in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Ahli, also moved up to second in Algeria’s all-time goalscorer ranking with 36 goals.
Ibrahim Maza, one of the top young talents in this year’s AFCON, announced his presence with a goal off the bench for Algeria. Petkovic might be tempted to start the Leverkusen man, although it’s likely he will continue to be utilised in a super-sub role.

In one of the wildest matches of the tournament so far, Burkina Faso pulled off a historic late comeback as they scored twice deep into stoppage time to beat 10-men Equatorial Guinea 2-1 on Wednesday. The Stallions are now well-placed to qualify for the round of 16 for the fourth time since 2017.
Burkina Faso’s dynamic attack has really been flexing their muscles in recent months with the team currently riding a five-match winning streak. During that stretch, Burkina Faso have scored a total of 12 goals, which includes 2+ goals in their last four straight.
Burkina Faso manager Brama Traore has a clean bill of health ahead of this Matchday 2 fixture. Maza’s club teammate Edmond Tapsoba will be leading the Stallions from the back, while the danger man in attack is Brentford’s Dango Ouattara.
Ouattara assisted the equaliser against Equatorial Guinea to make it 1-1 and also completed the most dribbles in the match at five. With Bertrand Traore taking up the right wing, expect Burkina Faso to target their pacey wingers on the counter attack.
Final Prediction:
Asian Handicap: Algeria -0.5
European Handicap: Algeria wins
Predicted Scores: 2-1, 3-1, 3-2
