In the first round of Group E at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Burkina Faso scored twice in 3 minutes of stoppage time to claim a dramatic 2-1 comeback win over Equatorial Guinea. 23-year-old Burkina Faso winger Georges Minougou netted the equalizer in the 95th minute.

According to reporters, Minougou lost vision in his left eye due to a severe infection in 2023, and doctors told him he would never play football again. However, at this AFCON, he made his tournament debut and scored a crucial goal.

Minougou currently plays for Major League Soccer (MLS) side Seattle Sounders FC, valued at €800,000 by Transfermarkt. He only joined the Burkina Faso national team in September this year, and has earned 5 caps, with this being his first international goal. He also featured in this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, making appearances against Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Previously, when talking about his left eye, he said: “That was one of the toughest moments of my life. I was one step away from a first-team contract, but then everything started to go downhill. My eye would act up after every training session, and eventually, I had to undergo surgery. It doesn’t affect me at all. My left eye can’t see, but I still keep working… I only have one eye, but I can do better than those with two good eyes. That’s my mindset.”
