Dayot Upamecano is seeking a substantial improvement in his financial terms, and his representatives informed Bayern Munich of this desire quite some time ago. The situation remains unchanged compared to a few months prior: the player’s camp is only willing to engage in contract extension talks with the club if three key conditions—related to salary, a signing-on fee, and a release clause—are met.
It is understood that Upamecano’s team has referenced the contracts of other Bayern players (Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Joshua Kimmich) and views the French defender as belonging to a similar tier as these teammates. For Bayern, however, the club’s senior management is focused on continuing cost-cutting efforts, which has resulted in the current stalemate.
Notably, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, a member of Bayern’s supervisory board, recently commented on the club’s salary-related matters, stating: “Sometimes you have to say ‘no’ to the salary demands put forward by players.”
Behind the scenes, there remains a strong sentiment within the club regarding Upamecano’s situation—one that, on principle, advocates for issuing a statement to flatly refuse yielding to the player’s demands. This is why Upamecano and his camp should not be overly confident that they will ultimately get what they are asking for.
As a result, the 26-year-old French centre-back is also exploring his future options. Reports indicate that since Upamecano’s contract with Bayern is set to expire in June 2026, Real Madrid is interested in acquiring him on a free transfer next summer.
