Paul Merson believes that Rúben Amorim—current Manchester United manager—is better suited to coaching Chelsea, arguing that Amorim’s tactics can work; they just need the right team to implement them.
Since joining Man Utd in November last year, Amorim has had a tough time at the club.
In their most recent match, the Red Devils (Man Utd’s nickname) were thrashed 3-0 by local rivals Manchester City (Man City) while playing away.
However, Merson did not claim that Amorim is unsuited to English football. Instead, he emphasized that he thinks Amorim’s tactics can be effective; they just need the right team.
“He will look back on his managerial career and say, ‘The reason I’ve gotten to where I am today is because I’ve stuck to my style of play’—things like the three-at-the-back system and advanced wing-backs,” Merson said.
“He would have been a perfect fit for Chelsea.”
“Chelsea have world-class wing-backs in Reece James and Gusto, plus Moises Caicedo, who is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league. His tactics would suit these players perfectly.”
“Nearly a year has passed since he took charge of Man Utd, yet he still hasn’t secured a winning streak in the league. For a club like Man Utd, that’s simply unbelievable. Unbelievable.”
After Man Utd’s 0-3 defeat to Man City at the Etihad Stadium last Sunday afternoon, Amorim remained confident. This loss at the Etihad has raised concerns among many Man Utd legends and fans.
“I won’t change my philosophy,” Amorim said after the match. “If they (Man Utd’s hierarchy) want to change that, then they should replace me.”
“I won’t alter my footballing philosophy. I will play the way I believe in until I choose to change myself.”
“Everyone, I understand (these issues) and accept that Man Utd’s current results are truly not what they should be. But you have no idea what has happened over the past few months.”
“I understand everything. It’s normal if fans lose faith, but I cannot accept that we are not getting better. We are making progress—we just aren’t seeing it reflected in the results. The records speak for themselves, and I know that.”
“What I want to say is, I will give my all. This isn’t something I can decide, and neither are the other things (outside my control). I will do my best. The pressure I’m under is greater than that on the fans.”
