Hamann: I’m Surprised Guardiola Still Manages Man City; He Can’t Lead the Team to Premier League or Champions League Titles

Recently, former Manchester City player Dietmar Hamann shared his views on the future of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola in an interview.

When asked whether Guardiola might leave his post next summer, Hamann said: “It’s possible. In fact, I said the same thing last year. Now that Guardiola is still with the team, I’m rather surprised, because everything comes to an end.”

"In the past few years, a lot of changes have taken place at Manchester City. The club has brought in quite a few new players, and there are also some long-serving veterans in the squad. You need to motivate them and ignite the fighting spirit in the players, the team, and even the fans. But Guardiola has been at Manchester City for too long, and I’m not sure if he can still do that."

"I said this summer that I would be surprised if Guardiola could lead the team to another major tournament title. And I still hold that view now—I don’t think Guardiola can lead Manchester City to win the Premier League title, nor the Champions League title. Of course, the team still has a chance to win five or six consecutive games and thus claim titles like the EFL Cup or FA Cup. But for those two most important trophies (the Premier

League and the Champions League), I don’t see any possibility of Guardiola leading the team to victory."

“I think Manchester City’s contract extension with Guardiola last year was more about easing the situation and calming public opinion, and perhaps also to silence those who said ‘he should have left long ago’. I don’t think Manchester City will sack him, but if he’s still managing Manchester City in two years, I’ll be surprised.”

When asked if Guardiola’s next job might be managing a national team, Hamann added: “This is likely the most possible option. I don’t see any possibility of him managing another club in England. Will he return to Germany? Bayern Munich might be the only possible choice, but I can hardly imagine that happening either.”

“Considering Guardiola is only in his early fifties, managing a national team may be his next goal. But I think he will first take a break. If you work as a club manager for ten consecutive years, you not only bear the pressure of pursuing success, but also have to deal with various accompanying tasks—such as mandatory media interviews. This job requires you to be on call 24 hours a day, and there are almost no moments to fully relax and disconnect.”

"Jürgen Klopp said after managing for eight or nine years, ‘I need a break now’. And Guardiola has been in this job longer than Klopp, and his work intensity may even be higher than Klopp’s. Therefore, he will most likely take a break first, and I’m sure many national teams will be willing to invite him to coach."
