Former England international and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is on the verge of a key milestone in his coaching career – reports suggest the 33-year-old has emerged as the top candidate for Luton Town’s managerial vacancy, with talks between the two parties in the final stages. He is expected to be officially appointed in the coming weeks, taking the helm of this League One relegation-threatened side.
Luton’s search for a new manager comes after sacking former boss Rob Edwards earlier this week. While Leyton Orient’s Richie Wellens also made it to the final interview stage, Wilshere has secured a "leading position" thanks to his potential, with only contract details left to finalize.
This is not Wilshere’s first foray into management: at the end of last season, he served as Norwich City’s interim manager, taking over for the club’s final two games after Dean Smith’s departure. Despite showing positive coaching ideas, he failed to land the permanent role. Later, he was linked with the Plymouth Argyle job, which eventually went to Lee Cattermole. Earlier in his coaching journey, Wilshere also gained experience as Arsenal U18 manager.
Luton, however, are currently in a tough spot: after two consecutive relegations, the team has made a poor start to the League One season, claiming just 5 wins from their first 11 games and sitting 11th in the table – narrowly above the relegation zone. The club hopes Wilshere can bring fresh ideas and energy to turn their fortunes around.
As a player, Wilshere was once a highly-touted talent: he made 197 appearances for Arsenal, winning two FA Cups, and earned 34 caps for the England national team. Now, taking on the challenge of managing a League One side at the age of 33, fans are eager to see if the "former Gunner" can write a new chapter of his legacy from the dugout.
