Latest reports indicate that negotiations between Bayern Munich and Dayot Upamecano over a contract extension have been deadlocked for months, with the French center-back’s current deal set to expire in the summer of 2026.
Sources reveal that Bayern Munich is considering making concessions to the French center-back in a bid to finalize an agreement.
The key to these concessions lies in a special clause within the contract—and specifically, the clause takes a highly unusual form.
Upamecano has demanded the inclusion of a release clause worth approximately €65 million in his contract, with the sticking point between the two parties being the effective date of this release clause.
The player’s agent has insisted that the release clause take effect in the first year after the potential renewal contract comes into force, i.e., 2027. In contrast, Bayern has maintained that the clause should only be effective in 2028.
However, Bayern Munich is now considering acceding to Upamecano’s wish by adding a clause that takes immediate effect in 2027, in order to finalize the new contract.
Why is Bayern Munich considering making such a concession?
The race for Upamecano is exceptionally fierce, with various wealthy top clubs in contention. Elite sides such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are among the main competitors. To persuade the player to stay long-term, Bayern’s management not only needs to offer a contract that is highly attractive both competitively and financially but also make certain compromises.
The release clause may serve as a compromise solution. It will allow Bayern Munich to retain their defensive linchpin for at least one more year, while also ensuring they receive a transfer fee of €65 million in the event of Upamecano’s departure.
