Anthony Gordon has played a key role in Newcastle United’s UEFA Champions League campaign. He firmly believes the Magpies can "be whatever we want to be" this season and publicly hit back at Karl-Heinz Rummenigge’s remarks about woltemade in an interview.
Gordon started in Wednesday night’s stunning 4-0 victory over Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise, as Eddie Howe’s revamped squad finally rediscovered their old form.
When asked about the team’s prospects this season, Gordon replied: "This season, we can do whatever we want to do. We can beat any opponent in any game.
I never think about us losing. As long as we can maintain our defensive structure and keep creating chances, we can beat anyone."
Before the match, record signing woltemade found himself the target of criticism from Rummenigge. The Bayern Munich executive claimed Stuttgart had found an "idiot" to sign the player they had been chasing for £69 million.
Gordon hit back at Rummenigge, saying: "I don’t understand why you’d comment on a player who’s not at your club. To be honest, it’s a bit ridiculous—especially when the player has had a really good start.
You’d only make comments like that if he’d had a really bad start, but he’s scored three goals in four games, so it’s a bit of a strange thing to say."
