The Qatar national football team was founded in 1960 and began participating in international and continental football competitions in 1970. It started competing in the AFC Asian Cup in 1976 but failed to advance from the group stage until 1992. At the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, as the host nation, Qatar reached the quarter-finals. On February 1, 2019, in the final of the UAE Asian Cup, Qatar defeated Japan 3-1 to win the Asian Cup title for the first time.

Qatar has participated in all FIFA World Cup qualifiers since 1978 but never qualified for the finals. As the host nation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar made its first appearance in the World Cup finals and became the first host team in history to be eliminated in advance.
On August 25, 2022, FIFA released the latest FIFA national team rankings, with the Qatar national men’s football team ranking 5th in Asia. In February 2024, Qatar defeated Jordan to successfully defend their Asian Cup title. On June 10, 2025, in the 10th round of Group A of the Asian World Cup qualifiers’ top 18 stage, Qatar lost 0-3 to Uzbekistan."
