AS Monaco FC is a professional football club based in the Principality of Monaco. It competes in Ligue 1 (the French top-flight football league) for the 2024-25 season, with its home ground at the Stade Louis II.
Team History
Founded on August 24, 1924, AS Monaco FC was invited by the French Football Federation to turn professional in 1933. In 1953, Monaco earned promotion to Ligue 1 for the first time. The 1960-61 season saw the club claim its first Ligue 1 title. During the 1962-63 season, Monaco secured both the Ligue 1 championship and the Coupe de France, achieving the first double in the club’s history.
In the 1987-88 season, Arsène Wenger took over as manager and led Monaco to the league title in his debut season. The 1991-92 season marked Monaco’s first appearance in the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup, where they lost to Germany’s Werder Bremen, finishing as runners-up. In the 2003-04 season, Monaco reached the UEFA Champions League final for the first time but were defeated by Portugal’s Porto.

Nowadays
In the 2010-11 season, Monaco lost to Lyon at home in the final round of Ligue 1, resulting in their relegation to Ligue 2 (the French second tier) for the first time in 35 years. They bounced back by winning the Ligue 2 title in the 2012-13 season, returning to Ligue 1. The 2016-17 season saw Monaco edge past Paris Saint-Germain to win the Ligue 1 title. On May 20, 2021, Monaco were beaten 0-2 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France final, finishing as runners-up.
On May 20, 2024, Monaco thrashed Nantes 4-0 in the final round of the 2023-24 Ligue 1 season, securing the league runners-up spot. On January 6, 2025, Monaco lost 0-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des Champions (French Super Cup) final, once again finishing as runners-up.
