Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire, 32, scored a winning header at Anfield to secure the club’s first victory at the stadium since 2016. It is understood that he is currently in talks with the club over a contract extension.
After the match against Liverpool, Maguire admitted that he did not know if he would still be at the club next season: “This is the last year of my career, and this might be the last time I play for this club at Anfield, so it was really important for me to come here and get a win.”
Maguire has eight months left on his current contract, with negotiations led by Director of Football Hargreaves. In January this year, manager Amorim activated the automatic contract extension clause in Maguire’s deal and restored him to a key role both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Currently, Maguire earns around £140,000 per week, a 25% reduction from his previous salary—an adjustment made after Manchester United failed to qualify for the 2024-25 Champions League. The club hopes to avoid a repeat of the pay-cut dispute with David De Gea. As for Maguire, although he and his family have settled in North West England, he is eager to stay at Old Trafford and willing to take a further pay cut. However, the two parties have not yet reached an agreement on a new contract.
