Given that Marc-André ter Stegen's contract runs until 2028, his future remains uncertain. However, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has repeatedly made it clear that the club's first-choice goalkeeper is Joan García.
The backdrop to this situation is that the German goalkeeper needs regular game time to ensure that Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann awards him the goalkeeper position in the German national team for the World Cup to be held next summer.
In this context, ter Stegen must make a choice: either join another club for the remainder of the season to secure a starting goalkeeper position, ensuring he meets the national team coach's requirements for first-team minutes and appearances; or alternatively, stay under Flick, even though he knows he is not the club's first-choice goalkeeper.
Nevertheless, the German goalkeeper continues to attract interest from various clubs, which have been secretly monitoring his physical condition. During the match against Guadalajara, it was evident that ter Stegen had recovered from his lumbar injury. However, several clubs have already asked Barcelona staff internally to obtain first-hand information about the goalkeeper.
One of these clubs is Premier League side Aston Villa, currently managed by Spanish coach Unai Emery. The team has a top-tier goalkeeper in Argentina World Cup winner Emiliano Martínez. But the Argentine international has recently been troubled by back problems, forcing him to miss several games. Additionally, his proposed transfer to Manchester United fell through last summer, and in November, Emery stripped him of the vice-captaincy. Meanwhile, clubs from the Turkish Super Lig and Saudi Pro League also remain interested in him.
Another club that has inquired about ter Stegen is Girona. The club has issues in the goalkeeper position, with first-choice goalkeeper Dominik Livaković set to leave the Montilivi Stadium in the upcoming winter transfer window, which has left a vacancy in the goalkeeper position.
