In the just-concluded Champions League match of this round, Real Madrid lost 1-2 to Manchester City at home after being reversed.
Former Real Madrid player Jonathan Woodgate argues that despite the Champions League defeat to Manchester City, Xabi Alonso should not lose his job, and Real Madrid should be more patient and give him time.
"I hope Xabi Alonso keeps his job. Hiring a young coach and only giving him six months makes no sense at all, absolutely no sense. You have to keep Alonso. You brought him in from Bayer Leverkusen, where he did an excellent job. If they sack him, it will be a terrible decision. They must give him time," the Englishman explained.
Woodgate is not the only one defending Xabi Alonso after the loss to Manchester City. Sports pundit Steve McManaman also explained that the defeat to City was not as bad as some of the losses Alonso has suffered this season, highlighting the team's defensive issues and Mbappé's absence. "This should be enough to calm the storm," said the player who played for Real Madrid between 1999 and 2003 and scored in the Champions League final against Valencia.
According to Madrid sources, Alonso's position is not currently in danger. However, it is clear that dropping points in five of the last seven games has been enough to spark discussions among Real Madrid fans and the technical area.
