The Swedish Football Association officially announced the appointment of Englishman Graham Potter as the new head coach of the national team.
After securing just one point from the first four World Cup qualifiers this autumn, the Swedish FA terminated the tenure of former head coach, Danish legend Jon Dahl Tomasson, last Tuesday.
Potter will manage the team in next month’s matches against Switzerland and Slovenia, as well as potential March play-offs. His contract will automatically extend if Sweden qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
“I approach this task with great humility and excitement,” said Potter. “Sweden has many players performing well in top global leagues. My job is to create conditions for us to perform at the highest level as a team and lead Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”
The 50-year-old Englishman boasts rich experience in British football and deep knowledge of Swedish football. He enjoyed notable success with Östersunds FK from 2011 to 2018, leading them to European competitions. After leaving Sweden, Potter managed Premier League clubs including Swansea City, Brighton, Chelsea, and West Ham United.
Swedish FA chairman Simon Östlund expressed satisfaction with the swift appointment: “Our goal remains qualifying for next summer’s World Cup. We aim to reach the March play-offs, and all decisions aim to maximize this. Graham Potter brings proven leadership at the highest level.”
Swedish FA director of football Kim Källström added: “Appointing Graham is very reassuring. He’ll unite the team with strong leadership, excel tactically in creating winning conditions, and identify players’ strengths.”
