Prediction: Burkina Faso wins

Burkina Faso lost in their only meeting with Sudan, at the 2012 AFCON, and there will be no better chance for revenge. They come into this game with the better run of form, having only lost once and won six of their last eight matches.

They have been better performers than Sudan at this level in the past few editions, and that pedigree will lift them here. Sudan needed an own goal to see off Equatorial Guinea last time out, and they know it will be tougher here. They will slot in here as outright underdogs, and our prediction for Sudan v Burkina Faso is that Burkina Faso wins.

Sudan’s only goal at this tournament was scored by an opposing player. That was in their 1-0 win against Equatorial Guinea. The East African nation had earlier commenced the tournament with a heavy defeat, falling 3-0 against Algeria. Having broken a four-game winless run, Sudan will feel ready for their more accomplished opponents. They are backed by a 2-1 win in the only contest between the two nations in history. That, however, was back in 2012, and a lot has changed since. Across their last 20 matches, Sudan managed just three wins. The loss to Algeria on matchday one was Sudan’s fifth in the last 10 outings.

Sudan will welcome Al Hilal Omdurman midfielder Salaheldin Alhassan to the fray after serving a one-match suspension. The 30-year-old was sent off after just 39 minutes of the defeat to Algeria, having picked up two bookings. His return will mean Amar Abdallah clears the way as Sudan are expected to stick with their preferred 4-3-3 structure. The Sudanese will once again be without Mohamed Abuaagla of Al Ahly Benghazi. The defender suffered an injury on matchday one against Algeria. The defeat to Algeria also saw Abobaker Eisa pick up an injury, and he is out here.

Burkina Faso, on the other hand, are coming from a losing outing. They went into matchday two unbeaten in seven matches, but that didn’t hold against a superior Algeria. Riyad Mahrez’s first-half penalty goal settled the match. One area of concern for Burkina Faso is the fact that they have conceded first in both of their matches here. It means in three of their last four outings the Burkinabe conceded the opening goal. In their only meeting with Sudan, they also conceded first as they lost 2-1. Six wins in their last eight games, however, will add to Burkina Faso’s confidence here.

Burkinabe have never lost whenever Dango Ouattara scored.

England-based Dango Ouattara will be one of Burkina Faso’s stars in this game, as he has a magical touch for this team. In his scoring outings, Burkina Faso have never lost. The Burkinabe will be hoping to tap on this heading into the game. The Brentford man had his mark in the comeback against Equatorial Guinea, with the assist for the equalizer. Edmond Tapsoba got the winner in the game, but he couldn’t repeat his heroics against a stronger Algeria side. Facing Sudan, he will be hoping for an impactful contribution.
